Guides

These government contracting guides cover SAM.gov, state portals, certifications, bids and grants. Everything here comes out of work we have actually done — registrations we have filed, validations we have unstuck, bids we have written. Where a government page says what the rule is, we have tried to say what it means and what it costs you to get it wrong.

Official federal sources we use

Every federal registration, bid and grant application we prepare starts from these four official government sites. All are free to use.

  • SAM.gov: register your entity, get your UEI and search federal contract opportunities. Its partners page lists the other official systems connected to it.
  • USAspending.gov: see who won federal contracts, for how much and where, so you can find prime contractors to team with.
  • Grants.gov: search open and forecasted federal grants and apply.
  • Acquisition.gov: the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), including the small business rules in Part 19.
